A transponder is a piece of electronic hardware that can receive and respond to coded signals via radio waves. The term is a combination of the words transmitter and responder. Transponders can be either passive or active. A transponder within the auto security domain usually has no battery and is not self-powered, but receives the necessary electricity to function via an induction loop around the ignition lock.
