The Cost of Lock Repair in Melbourne

During normal working hours, the price for the average lock repair is around $90 – $120 (without parts) for the first lock, and $30 – $50 per lock after that.
A typical example of a repair in this price range would be a strike adjustment on a deadbolt.
See how the lock bolt no longer aligns with the hole in the frame? In these cases, it’s a simple matter of adjusting the position of the lock or the strike plate.
Making the hole bigger and adjusting the position of the strike plate, we can make it work like new again.
If we have to remove a door and plane 5mm off all the edges, that obviously would be a bigger job, let’s say approximately $150 – 200. It’s difficult to give an accurate price of lock and door repairs unless we get more details. When you call, our phones are answered by actual locksmiths and we can usually easily ascertain what the problem is over the phone by asking the right questions. If we can’t get a good idea of what the problem is, then we’ll ask you to send us some photos to clarify.
At 24h Melbourne Locksmith, we have the following price guarantee: No Fix, No Fee. If we can’t fix it for the price we quoted, you don’t pay. This means you can be sure that the price you are quoted is the price you will pay. We will give you clear fixed pricing before we begin any work, and that will not change. You will never pay more than you were quoted, ever. No surprises.
We additionally offer a 100% unconditional guarantee for lock repair in Melbourne. If we can’t guarantee our repairs, we won’t make them.

Experts at Repairing All Locks

Our locksmiths are experts at repairing all types of locks. Experienced in lock servicing and adjustments, you can trust us not to needlessly replace any parts just to jack up the price.
The difficulty of repairs will depend on what repairs we are doing and what type of lock is being worked on. For instance, a strike adjustment for a deadbolt on a timber door is easier than removing a metal door for grinding after it has expanded.

A Fast and Reliable Response

We offer same-day service to customers who are not in a rush, and a 30 minute response for those who are experiencing an emergency. If you do have an emergency lock problem, we endeavour to attend to you as soon as possible.
The average lock repair once on site takes less than 30 minutes. This means that the problem can be solved in an hour from now if you call right now. What are you waiting for?

Free Lock Health and Safety Check

We offer a 100% free health and safety check of all the locks and doors in your home whilst we’re on site, which includes the tightening of any loose screws and also the lubrication of any locks and hinges that need it. We do this for free to ensure that all locks in your home are in tip-top shape and also to pre-empt anything of concern. We do not charge extra for this service − only if repairs are needed, quoted and agreed upon by the customer.
We are good, honest, hard-working locksmiths. We will never unnecessarily sell you something you don’t need. If it can be repaired, we will repair it. If it needs to be replaced, then we will let you know that too. You can count on us to give it to you straight when it comes to your lock repairs and adjustments.

Common Lock Repairs

Some common problems we can provide lock repair in Melbourne for include:

Strike Adjustment

Doors, frames and houses are subject to movements all the time from varying forces. When the weather heats up, the house heats up and everything expands. When the weather cools down, the house cools down and contracts. Movements caused by normal weather are responsible for most of the strike adjustment jobs we see. We can tell this by the sudden surge in these types of jobs if the weather suddenly gets extremely hot or cold.
Another cause of a lock not aligning properly when it once did is movements in the earth which hold the supporting stumps. Some types of soil are different to others and some are subject to seismic forces that only geologists know about. Some areas of Melbourne are worse than others, with the Glen Waverley hill area being one of the worst for this type of job. Unfortunately, there’s not much we can do to prevent the necessity of this type of job, as the forces which cause the problem are outside of our control. One possible solution to a house or structure that continually needs strike adjustment is to drastically enlarge the holes that the lock bolts and latches lock into. This works but comes with its own drawbacks, such as doors that rattle in the wind.

Door Not Shutting

This is a similar problem to the one above, but more often water is soaking into the door or the frame. When the environment is wet and the door or the frame are not sealed 100%, they will act like a sponge and over time soak up any moisture in the immediate environment, causing dramatic expansion. The solution to this problem is to remove the door from its hinges and plane the edges until it fits properly in the doorway again. Once the door is correctly planed to size, we advise to take one more pass with the plane on every edge before sealing the door with the appropriate paint and re hanging the door. We do not paint doors or frames.

Lock Cylinder is Loose

Screws come loose over time. A very common lock repair job for us is a simple cylinder tighten job. It’s not uncommon at all to see a lock that has been on the door for 25 years and never been removed for service or a tightening. Over those 25 years, it’s likely been used up to 5 times per day, so it may have been used 50,000 times. Every single time the key has turned smoothly in the lock, it will ever so slightly have applied some torque to the screws that hold in the cylinder. This slight bit of torque applied 50,000 times over has incrementally loosened the retaining screws, and it’s now loose and rattles about whenever we insert the key. With jobs like this, we simply remove the lock and give it a complete service and re-install it using Loctite on the retaining screws. Loctite is a type of “screw glue” that’s used on aircraft and big machines to stop crucial screws from vibrating loose. Loctite only sets hard when the screw is tight, and it can be loosened again easily when desired by using the correct screwdriver. Good quality locks already come with Loctite on their crucial components when they’re new, and they usually don’t require any to be applied. It’s usually the cheaper locks that need Loctite.

Security Door Not Locking

Security doors are subject to all the same geo and thermal forces as the other doors previously discussed. However, they are also usually hung in a slap-dash manner, with the hinge surface fitted and not supported by any recess checked out of the timber. They can also be quite heavy doors relative to the screws that hold them, causing them to “move” quite a lot.
Most security doors are also reliant on an “activation” latch in order for them to function properly. The “activation” latch has to be depressed upon closure of the door in order to throw the main bolt. With the throwing of the main bolt, the key won’t turn and the handles won’t lock, and that is when you know you have a problem. At 24h Melbourne Locksmith, we can perform lock repair for all types of security door without any hassle and at the best prices around. Give us a call today.

A typical lock repair job that doesn’t need any parts to complete starts from around $90 – $120.
